New e-learning method for mobile language learning
Results of the Just in Time reBlending –project

Intended for learners in vocational education needing German skills in everyday working life, just in time and on demand, for trainers teaching German language in vocational educations institutions, and for further developers of mobile language courses.

The new e-learning method to be used in mobile learning environment comprises an e-learning entity; The new method is based on the theory 5 courses, learning material, the method, and MOLE = Mobile Learning Environment. for learning languages in a mobile environment, where the learner is mobile and learning just-in-time and just-in-case in authentic working situations. The e-learning pedagogical aspects are the glue between the methods, learning material and technical implementation.

Other products, theories, studies, dissemination activities and material, are supporting precuts for the project and the reached products.

The outcomes can be divided into four main groups. The number of the outcomes follow the numbering of the project, but the name of the product indicates the function of the product: 1) The main outcome; the language courses, 2) Products and guides for teachers and trainers, 3) Research material and background information for further understanding and studying and 4) valorisation material

1) The language courses

The main outcome of the Just in Time reBlending-project is the Course Concept; the new e-learning method to be used in mobile learning environment

Courses for the German Language and Culture sensitive Communication Skills and Modelled Learning Processes Templates (Product No. 9) based on the Learning Objects, the content of the courses (Product No. 7)

The courses are part of different learning situations for the target groups, learners doing business, German speaking countries, company employees and students.

The courses are accessible through the web based learning platform to be used in the mobile environment Mobile Supported Learning Multiplatform MOLE (Product No. 5). It is designed to be accessible by web, PDA´s or Mobiles, in this context for learning German language on demand in authentic situations. MOLE enhances the learner’s culture sensitive contextual skill when communicating in business related situations by new motivating and rewarding methods to learn by being accessible from mobile or from the web.

The MOLE comprises the Intelligent tutoring system (Product No. 6). The application has an automatic intelligent tutoring component that let the learner send a request and get instant feedback automatically by SMS or email. The learner can access the application from a mobile, PDA or web. New tutoring methods customized for the use in mobile environment was needed to be developed. When starting the project mobile technology was not as developed as it is today but the methods and application are designed for the future. Investigations were made to analyze new learning methods.

Open Source Code (Product No. 8). A copy of the application is available for downloads and installation. It is in zip-format with installing instructions. The Application platform is released under the GPL License. The documentation consists of information on programming languages, instructions, description on database implementation. Translation instructions are available in 6 languages.

2) Teachers and trainers

For teachers and trainers the (Product No. 3). Description of new teaching and learning methods as well as practices used in e-learning and mobile learning (in the field of German language, culture sensitive contextual communication skills).Teacher’s Guide to new methods (Product No. 4) helps teachers to design an carry out mobile tutoring and teaching in the authentic environment. It facilitates teachers to utlize mobile devices pedagogically meaningfully. The Guide provides a wide focus on different possibilities and methods to use mobile lealrning and tutoring. Teachers´/tutors` training (Product No. 10) and Teachers/trainers guide/manual (Product No. 11) . Using blended learning methods and mobile learning tools in pedagogically meaningful learning processes for vocational education provide guidelines and help for using the courses and learning objects as well as information about the learning.

3) Other outcomes

Other outcomes of the project have been needed to develop the new web based learning method using mobile devices: Need Analysis (Products No. 1) and User analysis (Product No. 2).

The products Best Practices (Product No. 12) and Piloting phase report & evaluation (Product No. 13) are valuable for a trainer to obtain information about the experiences of the use of the courses and learning objects in practice.

4) Valorization material
